2011 Jaguar XJ Spy Shots Revealed, Sir William Lyons Turns In His Grave

Jaguar XJ Concept

Spy shots and concept photos published in British publication Car [which I came across via Autopia] reveal a Jaguar XJ that has been redesigned to ensure that Jaguar ultimately meets the same fate as Volvo: obscurity and unpopularity. Abandoning the traditional makeup WHICH MADE THEM LEGENDARY - ahem, excuse me - Jaguar’s design chief Ian Callum appears to have engineered yet another interchangeably-styled luxury sedan. 2011 XJ test mules that were spotted on the test track were heavily disguised under the body work of the current model XJ saloon’s, but I’m not fooled. According to sources, the Jaguar XJ’s new design direction is a heavy crossbreeding of the Aston Martin Rapide and the Bentley Continental GT, which several auto enthusaists have heralded as a much-needed revision of the Jaguar XJ’s “outdated style.”

Sigh.

Ok. Let me break this down for you: When Ford bought Volvo in 1999 they performed the same kind of overhaul, abandoning the “turbo brick” styling. The result was a retooled Volvo that looked like little more than a high-end Ford Taurus. Now, thanks to that brilliant maneuver, Volvo’s popularity as a brand has been “put in the back on the discount rack, like another can of beans,” [to quote Billy Joel]. The only motorists that are still enthusiastic about Volvo are the loyjala fanatiker like myself who remain true to the original Volvo line, manufactured from 1927 to 1999. As a matter of fact, if you ever crack open the pages of Rolling Magazine [the official publication of the Volvo Club Of America], you’ll notice a distinct lack of anything influenced by Ford.

Like Volvo, Jaguar’s design isn’t merely an odd, “outdated” aesthetic, it’s a tradition-rich design upon which Jaguar’s legacy has been built. If it’s drastically altered to resemble yet another Bentley look-alike, you will effectively destroy the only traditional thread the Jaguar XJ had left to cling to. Granted, the entire Jaguar line has suffered a fall from popularity, but tampering with it’s only remaining prize-winning formula isn’t going to change that. I say to Jaguar: leave the XJ alone and focus instead on fine-tuning the two models that are already trying to embolden the mix, the Jaguar XK and the XF. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself sitting next to Volvo on the discount shelf…I hope you like beans.

Volvo Plug-in Hybrid On The Horizon

Volvo ReCharge
Volvo ReCharge

Volvos have always been a smart vehicle choice for those that are concerned with safety.  The historically box-shaped vehicles are built like tanks and are known for racking up astronomically high mileage on the odometer.  Now Volvo, along with everyone else, is looking to add a plug-in hybrid to its lineup.

Plugged In
Volvo: Plugged In

The ReCharge Concept pictured is a redesigned Volvo C30 with individual electric wheel motors and batteries that can be charged via a regular electrical outlet.  When fully charged it can be driven approximately 62 miles on battery power alone before the car’s four-cylinder 1.6 Flexifuel engine is needed to power the car and recharge the battery. Performance figures for the concept car is 0-62mph in 9 seconds and a top speed of 100mph.

According to Volvo brass, “This plug-in hybrid car, when used as intended, should have about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today.  Emissions may be even lower if most of the electricity comes from CO2-friendly sources such as biogas, hydropower and nuclear power.  A person driving less than 60 miles per day will rarely need to visit a filling station.”

Operating costs are estimated to be about 80 percent lower compared to a similar gas-powered car when using battery power alone and those that have even longer daily drive would benefit.  In a 93 mile commute a driver could expect to get 124 mpg if they start with a fully charged car.  The only extra cost will be the electricity used during charging. The Volvo ReCharge Concept can be charged at any regular electric plug socket at convenient locations such as at home or work and a full recharge will take three hours. However, even a quick one hour charge provides enough power to cover just over 30 miles.  During operation the combustion engine starts up automatically when 70 percent of the battery power has been used.  The driver also has the option of controlling the four-cylinder Flexifuel engine manually via a button in the control panel.

The Volvo ReCharge Concept combines a number of the latest technological innovations into a so-called “series hybrid” where there is no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels.  With an individual electric motor at each wheel, weight distribution as well as mechanical efficiency and traction are maximised and the friction in mechanical gears is eliminated. Since the car does not have the transmission found in ordinary cars, there is no need for a gear lever.  Much like other hybrids currently produced, the energy that is generated during braking is transmitted to the battery pack.  When the system is ultimately developed, traditional wheel brakes will be completely replaced by electrical brakes with minimal energy wasted through friction.

It looks like in addition to the Volt and other plug-ins that are being rolled out over the next couple years, Volvo-lovers will have the opportunity to join the zero-emissions club.

The IFR Aspid Super Sport: It’s What’s On The Inside That Counts, Really

Making its international debut at the British International Auto Show on July 22, the brand new IFR Aspid Super Sport stole the show. A super car by definition, the IFR Aspid Super Sport is a front engine, rear-wheel drive, luxury two-seater sportscar. Although its interesting (read: really acquired taste) exterior design suggests Lotus lineage, the IFR Aspid is in a league all its own.

Ground breaking technology, an unbelievable 50mpg, and the impressive power that usually comes standard with $100,000 sports car ($107,000; if you want to split hairs), does much to quickly set the Aspid Super Sport apart from would-be competitors. Unquestionably a car made to flex its specs on the asphalt (legally too, with its FIA endorsement), the IFR Aspid Super Sport boasts a 4-cylinder Supercharged engine capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 mph in 5.9 seconds, and from 0 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds. In addition, the Aspid Super Sport also features a curb weight of 1,543 and a 402-horsepower engine, which clocks it in with a power-to-weight ratio of 570-horsepower-per-ton. According to egineering genuis and company founder, Ignacio Fernandez Rodriquez, “The whole point of the Aspid is that it is small and lightning fast, just like its namesake.”

The Aspid Super Sport’s performance stats certainly appear to spell “track car”, but the Aspid Super Sport is not the bare-essentials F-1 you would expect. Featuring both Bluetooth and WiFi capability, the Aspid Super Sport’s instrument panel and driver controls have all been integrated into one, user-friendly touch screen located in the center of the steering wheel. Offering a surprising amount of legroom given the Aspid Super Sport’s compact styling, the interior is a leather-clad, carbon-fiber, La-Z-Boy – our at least as close as you’re going to get to one barrelling down the freeway ( er, I mean – “closed professional driving course”) at 150 mph.

Car sQuba: The Underwater Car

A Swiss company called Rinspeed has developed an interesting concept car: an underwater car. Named “sQuba,” the car can both drive on roads, and then - at the push of a button - dive up to 10 meters (33 feet) underwater.

sQuba

Rinspeed describes sQuba as the world’s first real car to drive both on land and underwater, thanks to some cutting-edge technology. The car has a steel chassis, while its lightweight body panels are made of carbon nanotubes.

sQuba

This is truly a concept car, but I can see some folks actually wanting one of these like my old neighbor who has been chasing the elusive trout in the dredge pond down the road. We could drive the car in to take a closer look to see where the trout are hiding and drop our lines out the window.

2010 Camaro Test Mule Exudes Thunder at Nurburgring

A lot of car fans and Camaro lovers are chomping at the bit to get a taste of the new Camaro slated to be released as a 2010 model. The above video is a mere teaser of the look and sound that will be the new Camaro. For many, all the sneak-peeks and video have been magnificent teasers for a crowd already percolating with interest.

Well if you thought the above video was of any interest you will want to take the leap over to the Camaro5forum for a longer version of the same test run, but without the dialogue. During the linked video you will get a clearer impression of the V8 rumble that Chevy has in store for their Camaro faithful. It is truly a note that would catch the ear of any muscle car aficionado.

One less fortunate note during the video was watching the Camaro get buzzed by a very swift Porsche. You will also catch a glimpse of a Pontiac G8 GT testing on the same track of the Camaro.

Honda to Send CR-Z Hybrid to Geneva: Gives Europe First Dibs

HondaCR-ZConcept-5.jpg picture by willfusion

After making a couple stops along the North American Teaser Tour Honda is preparing to take their CR-Z Hybrid over to the Geneva Auto Show, but with a bit more business in mind than just showing off. Word has come out that Europe will be the first to get the new Honda Hybrid some time between 2009 and 2010. This could be yet another devastating blow to the Americans as they seem to be playing second-fiddle to Europe and Asia when it comes to new car releases. It must be foreign auto makers way of “Sticking it to the man,” and it seems that North America is “the Man.”

Honda’s CR-Z Hybrid, which first appeared in Tokyo, carries in its design some genetic breeding to its 80’s ancestor the CRX. Ofcourse in the CR-Z Hybrid you have a gasoline engine that is assisted by an electric motor that is housed between the engine and the transmission. Unfortunately, with this Hybrid setup there will be no all-electric driving option, but hopefully the Hybrid assist will bring the fuel mileage numbers up to the old CRX’s numbers. Even back in the day friends were bragging about achieving 40 to 50 to almost 60mpg. Some of that may have been hyperbole and some of it true, but any of those would be good targets for Honda.    …photo gallery to follow… (more…)

Corvette’s “Blue Devil” will officially be badged as the next ZR1

corvette

After rounds of speculation and misdirection Chevrolet finally comes out to say that the Corvette referred to as “Blue Devil” and thought to be the upcoming ZO7 is actually going to get badged as the ZR1. The ZR1 badging was first used in 1971 and then revived again in the 90’s. It is usually earmarked as the fastest of the Corvette breed during its limited production run. With a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 it is promised to have more horsepower than the current 505-hp ZO6.

The all new supercharged Corvette is listed as a 2009 model and will begin production in 2008. Sales for the ZR1 are projected to begin in late 2008. And if you think the ZO6 costs a pretty penny just wait until you get a load of this Corvette. Supercharging a production car does not come cheap.

It is also believed that the same 6.2 liter V8 that is in the ZR1 is what will find its way into the next Cadillac CTS-v. What a mighty tandem they will make for GM.

The ZR1 Corvette is going to have its coming-out party at this years Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) in January. Look for more information from Chevrolet during that time.

Italian Creates Uragano - Handbuilt Supercar

Filandri Moreno may not be Enzo Ferrari, but he sure dreams like the late founder of the Italian supercar maker. Moreno, a 47-year old citizen of Northern Italy, has emerged from his garage after building his own supercar for the last four years. The amazing part about the car, which Moreno dubbed the Uragano (Italian for Hurricane), is that Moreno built the entire car himself — every detail, from the car’s brakes to suspension.

The only thing that the Italian-native didn’t build himself is the car’s Audi-sourced 4.2L V8, which Moreno got from a donor Audi A8.

Not much else is known about the Uragano — including performance specs — but it looks as though Moreno added a turbocharger to the Audi mill.

The overall look of the car is pretty slick, with some obvious influence from earlier Ferraris. The Uragano even pulls off the bare metal look quite well.

There are no plans to put the Uragano into production, but it’s pretty impressive that one man could design a build an entire car from scratch — excluding the car’s engine — in just four years.
