Cadillac CTS Coupe Delayed Until Summer of 2010

GM was supposed to release the much anticipated Cadillac CTS Coupe this summer, but it looks like the coupe has been delayed a year until the summer of 2010.

The change is plans is most likely due to GM's current economic condition. Cadillac's director of communications cited "changes to the overall portfolio" as the reason for the delay.

Cadillac is still moving forward with the launch of the CTS wagon this spring and the new SRX crossover this summer.

2009 North American Car Of The Year Nominees

2009 Car of the Year Nominee: Dodge Challenger

In January of next year the North American Car and Truck of the Year winners will be announced during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.  The process that leads to that decision began last week with the release of the first round of 26 finalists.  Not suprisingly, vehicles from the crossover segment of the industry dominate this year’s list.

Since its inception in 1994, the winners of this prestigious award are chosen by a jury of 47 automotive journalists.  The path to the finals begins with a listing of all eligible vehicles, which in terms of this award means new or substantial modified existing models.  Earlier this month, jurors reviewed the entire list and picked the vehicles they thought deserved additional consideration on the next ballot. They were asked to limit their list to 10 cars and 10 trucks but are told to give the benefit of the doubt to vehicles they have not yet driven, which means their list may exceed 10 each.  Prior to the December 3rd deadline jurors send that ballot in to be tallied and the top three that emerge from that vote from each category are again voted on.  Finally, the winners are announced in January in Detroit.

In contrast to the long list of crossovers on both the truck and car lists, the only true pickups to make the cut this year are the Dodge Ram and Ford F-150.  A single SUV, the Kia Borrego is also a finalist.  Because the very nature of a “crossover” is a vehicle that has at least partial characteristics of both a car and a truck the process is a bit more complicated for this year.

A few of the more performance oriented front-runners for the award this year include the twin-turbo BMW 1-series, Nissan’s GT-R, the Dodge Challenger and the supercharged Cadillac CTS-V.  Whether the current economic and environmental climates have an impact on the voting will be interesting to see.  The full list of nominees is listed below.

  • Audi A4
  • BMW 1-series
  • Cadillac CTS-V
  • Dodge Challenger

  • Honda Fit

  • Infiniti FX35/50
  • Kia Borrego
  • Mercedes ML320 BlueTEC

Scuderia Ferrari unveils the new F60

Click above to view the new Scuderia Ferrari F60 in high resolution

Most years it's more of the same. All the constructors in the FIA Formula One World Championship unveil their cars, and for the most part they look the incredibly similar to the ones they had last year. Big whoop. But every so often, the technical regulations are shaken up a little and the cars come out looking entirely different. This is one of those years -- say "hello" to the Scuderia Ferrari F60.

The most substantial changes have been made to the aerodynamic formula, which has dictated a bigger front wing and a much narrower rear aerofoila. F1 has also moved back to slick tires, while underneath the more streamlined bodywork Ferrari has fitted the new Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) developed together with Magneti-Marelli, along with the new carbon-encased seven-speed sequential gearbox with limited slip differential.

Ferrari has opted to call this the F60, eschewing the typical numbering system that would have labeled it the F2009 while highlighting the fact that this will be the 60th season of Formula One - in which Ferrari is the only team to have competed in each and every one. Due to weather conditions, the official live unveiling of the F60 was moved from the company's on-site Fiorano test track to its Mugello circuit, where Felipe Massa will test drive it for the first time. Check it out for yourself in the gallery below, and see all the details at f60.ferrariworld.com.

Even The Dutch Heard About Joe The Plumber [Ad Watch]

This clever "Joe The Plumber" ad placed by Citroën in De Telegraaf, the largest paper in The Netherlands, opposite the November 5th election results.

Designed by advertising agency Euro RSCG, the ad for the Citroën Berlingo played off of the almost surreal emergence of "Joe The Plumber" as a figure in the 2008 Presidential Election. As Joe was meant to represent all small business owners and tradesman, pairing it with a vehicle designed for just this crowd was a smart choice. Next to a page of choices, the Berlingo is Joe's true choice.

Utilizing the interest over the election and placing the ad where people will most likely get the joke was another brilliant choice. These kinds of ads, which take advantage of predictable events, are a good way to stretch advertising dollars. In fact, this wasn't even a full page ad but it surely has a large impact.

Detroit 09' Preview: 2010 Cadillac SRX Gets Throughly Reworked

2010_cadillac_srx_official.jpg
Cadillac has officially unveiled the 2010 Cadillac SRX crossover.

The next-generation SRX ditches the wagon-like styling from the last-generation for something more "crossover" like. It's styling was previewed by the Provoq concept. The 2010 SRX builds on Cadillac's Art and Science design theme with its multi-piece shield grille and iconic vertical headlamps.

The SRX is powered by a new, 260 horsepower 3.0L direct injected V-6 engine, standard and a new, 300 horsepower 2.8L turbocharged V-6 is optional. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front and all-wheel-drive will be offered. It's not known if GM is planning a hybrid version of the SRX to help it go head to head with its closest competitor, the Lexus RX.

Backyard Lambo Of The Day: The Lam-Bro-Ghini [Bacykard Lambo Of The Day]

The Lam-Bro-Ghini, which appears to have once been an FC RX-7, is a true exotic. And when we say exotic, what we really mean is a car with a severe case of the exotic disease Leishmaniasis.

An avid Ferrari Chat reader spotted this Lam-Bro-Ghini sitting in an alley in Santa Rosa, CA. The A-pillars have been cut and laid back to give it an ultra-aerodynamic profile to match the new sheet-metal roof. Surely, the polished, glare-inducing sheet metal roof is there to disguise this rocket from flying pigs and potential speed cameras. We’d also guess it’s there to act as a heat conductor since the owner likely removed the heater system in the search for lightness. The monster-motor sitting underneath the hood is cooled by any number of heat extractors; necessary when traveling at the break-neck speeds this Lam-Bro-Ghini is surely capable of.

Since this beast generates so much heat in its quest for top speed supremacy, the rear has been sliced and diced for both heat extraction and aerodynamic aid. Stopping power for the Lam-Bro-Ghini is provided by a sporty set of 10-inch rotors with 4-piston calipers and a permanent airbrake that helps bring this red missile back to boulevard cruising speeds.

We’ve seen some quality Fauxborghinis and Fauxrraris in our day and this Lam-Bro-Ghini is right up there with them. It almost made us believers. Almost. Hat Tip To Kenny!

2010 VW Rabbit TDI Will Hop [Sorry] Into The U.S. Next Fall

2010 Volkswagen Rabbit TDI Spy Photo

Eagerly anticipated by environmentalists and Vee Dub fans, the 2010 eco-friendly, diesel-fueled VW Rabbit TDI will be introduced to the U.S. in the fall of ‘09. According the VW, the Rabbit TDI’s will be released in a limited number and are intended to measure the market’s receptiveness of compact, diesel cars.

Powered by VW’s 2.0L Clean Diesel engine, the 2010 Rabbit TDI features the same performance as a standard-fuel Rabbit but with double the fuel efficiency. Featuring an EPA fuel consumption estimate of 50 mpg combined, the Rabbit TDI also delivers 140-hp and 235 lb-ft of torque - not to shabby for such a green machine. To separate it from the herd [again, sorry], the 2009 Rabbit TDI will get half the murder treatment, with a dark charcoal/black chrome replacing the usual platinum chrome finish. Price estimates place the 2009 VW Rabbit TDI at around $18k, and I can honestly say that I can’t wait to get my hands on one.

2011 Jaguar XJ Spy Shots Revealed, Sir William Lyons Turns In His Grave

Jaguar XJ Concept

Spy shots and concept photos published in British publication Car [which I came across via Autopia] reveal a Jaguar XJ that has been redesigned to ensure that Jaguar ultimately meets the same fate as Volvo: obscurity and unpopularity. Abandoning the traditional makeup WHICH MADE THEM LEGENDARY - ahem, excuse me - Jaguar’s design chief Ian Callum appears to have engineered yet another interchangeably-styled luxury sedan. 2011 XJ test mules that were spotted on the test track were heavily disguised under the body work of the current model XJ saloon’s, but I’m not fooled. According to sources, the Jaguar XJ’s new design direction is a heavy crossbreeding of the Aston Martin Rapide and the Bentley Continental GT, which several auto enthusaists have heralded as a much-needed revision of the Jaguar XJ’s “outdated style.”

Sigh.

Ok. Let me break this down for you: When Ford bought Volvo in 1999 they performed the same kind of overhaul, abandoning the “turbo brick” styling. The result was a retooled Volvo that looked like little more than a high-end Ford Taurus. Now, thanks to that brilliant maneuver, Volvo’s popularity as a brand has been “put in the back on the discount rack, like another can of beans,” [to quote Billy Joel]. The only motorists that are still enthusiastic about Volvo are the loyjala fanatiker like myself who remain true to the original Volvo line, manufactured from 1927 to 1999. As a matter of fact, if you ever crack open the pages of Rolling Magazine [the official publication of the Volvo Club Of America], you’ll notice a distinct lack of anything influenced by Ford.

2011 Jaguar XF Spy Photos

Like Volvo, Jaguar’s design isn’t merely an odd, “outdated” aesthetic, it’s a tradition-rich design upon which Jaguar’s legacy has been built. If it’s drastically altered to resemble yet another Bentley look-alike, you will effectively destroy the only traditional thread the Jaguar XJ had left to cling to. Granted, the entire Jaguar line has suffered a fall from popularity, but tampering with it’s only remaining prize-winning formula isn’t going to change that. I say to Jaguar: leave the XJ alone and focus instead on fine-tuning the two models that are already trying to embolden the mix, the Jaguar XK and the XF. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself sitting next to Volvo on the discount shelf…I hope you like beans.
