2009 North American Car Of The Year Nominees

Dodge Challenger
2009 Car of the Year Nominee: Dodge Challenger

In January of next year the North American Car and Truck of the Year winners will be announced during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.  The process that leads to that decision began last week with the release of the first round of 26 finalists.  Not suprisingly, vehicles from the crossover segment of the industry dominate this year’s list.

Since its inception in 1994, the winners of this prestigious award are chosen by a jury of 47 automotive journalists.  The path to the finals begins with a listing of all eligible vehicles, which in terms of this award means new or substantial modified existing models.  Earlier this month, jurors reviewed the entire list and picked the vehicles they thought deserved additional consideration on the next ballot. They were asked to limit their list to 10 cars and 10 trucks but are told to give the benefit of the doubt to vehicles they have not yet driven, which means their list may exceed 10 each.  Prior to the December 3rd deadline jurors send that ballot in to be tallied and the top three that emerge from that vote from each category are again voted on.  Finally, the winners are announced in January in Detroit.

In contrast to the long list of crossovers on both the truck and car lists, the only true pickups to make the cut this year are the Dodge Ram and Ford F-150.  A single SUV, the Kia Borrego is also a finalist.  Because the very nature of a “crossover” is a vehicle that has at least partial characteristics of both a car and a truck the process is a bit more complicated for this year.

A few of the more performance oriented front-runners for the award this year include the twin-turbo BMW 1-series, Nissan’s GT-R, the Dodge Challenger and the supercharged Cadillac CTS-V.  Whether the current economic and environmental climates have an impact on the voting will be interesting to see.  The full list of nominees is listed below.

Volvo to webcast Detroit Auto Show press conference live

Click above for a hi-res gallery of the Volvo S60 Concept

It may not be the same as attending the event in-person, but a live, interactive webcast of Volvo's press conference at the Detroit Auto Show, where the S60 concept and production XC60 for North America will be shown, could be the next best thing. The broadcast is intended for media types and members of the press, but the fact that it's being aired on DirecTV (channel 101, January 11 at 5:30 - 6:30 PM ET) means that anybody with a television and the satellite service can watch it live. Alternatively, users can register for a password to the online site, the location of which is not yet determined.

The coolest bit of tech that's making an appearance for this event is the capability to send questions to a live host who will then relay selected inquiries to key Volvo executives. These days, the global economic downturn is affecting everyone, including those who would normally cover these events for the media. This being the case and assuming the event is a success, we'd expect to more manufacturers to adopt a similar system at upcoming auto shows. Of course, we'll be there live and you can always direct your browsers to our pages for the best coverage available.

Spy Shots: 2010 Ford Taurus

Although we were privy to a sneak-peek of the 2010 Ford Taurus ahead of its unveiling, we fear that frowning burly men in limo-tinted black Expeditions will appear in our driveways if we disclose anything. Thus, we present you with the next best thing: Spy shots.

Espionage artists have captured our best look yet at the coming large sedan, courtesy of this be-larvaed test mule that was caught wandering in Detroit's fresh snow. With the light clusters and grille exposed and most of the camouflage removed, it's easier to see that the 2010 Taurus has a lower stance compared to the current high-riding iteration. A thick beltline remains, but the greenhouse is notably shallower than on the current car and the roofline appears less rounded, leading to the conclusion that this Taurus has all-new sheet metal. Up front, the chiseled front end displays a more assertive face thanks to swept back headlamp clusters and a dimpled riff on Ford's trademark three-bar grille, and a small D-shaped fender vent displays the sedan's upscale intentions.

Word is that the Taurus will retain the current model's D3 platform, but expect a brace of new technology underhood and in the cabin as the Blue Oval looks to reclaim some of the Taurus' lost luster when it debuts, likely at the Detroit Auto Show.

Honda Kills Detroit Auto Show Press Conference Dead, We Update Floor Map [Detroit Auto Show]

Just as soon as we published our very unofficial "Carpocalypse Now" edition floor map for January's Detroit Auto Show we saw what our sources told us would happen — the Chinese automakers are movin' on up to the main floor. Today comes more bad news for the nation's premiere international auto show that's caused us to update the floor map again below the jump — Honda's decided to forgo a press conference.

Honda spokesman Kurt Antonius, says since Honda won't "be doing 'traditional' product unveilings" at Detroit, there was no need to do anything other than drop the Honda Insight concept we've already seen out into the booth and that's about it. No other reasons were given for the move, although we'd hazard a guess it's got something to do with this whole credit crunch thing. Hmm, and conventional wisdom told us that only affected U.S. automakers. Well, guess we've got to update that floor map again. Send us tips if you've got more information on what other changes to come we may not yet know of.
