Car sQuba: The Underwater Car

A Swiss company called Rinspeed has developed an interesting concept car: an underwater car. Named “sQuba,” the car can both drive on roads, and then - at the push of a button - dive up to 10 meters (33 feet) underwater.

sQuba

Rinspeed describes sQuba as the world’s first real car to drive both on land and underwater, thanks to some cutting-edge technology. The car has a steel chassis, while its lightweight body panels are made of carbon nanotubes.

sQuba

This is truly a concept car, but I can see some folks actually wanting one of these like my old neighbor who has been chasing the elusive trout in the dredge pond down the road. We could drive the car in to take a closer look to see where the trout are hiding and drop our lines out the window.

1965 Volkswagen Transporter Walk-Through Panel Van [Down On The Street]

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. I know what many of you DOTS aficionados are saying now. You're saying "Hey, didn't we just have an old VW bus a mere two Truck Mondays ago? What about that '78 Power Wagon we still haven't seen?" However, the VW geeks out there are saying "Oooooh! The doors!" Yes, this here Alameda Transporter has the rare and sought-after "walk-through" double door setup, which means we're doing VWs for two of the last three Truck Mondays.

I found this bus in the same neighborhood as the incredibly low Transporter, but I'm pretty sure it's not owned by the same guy. For one thing, it could still be lowered another few inches and- theoretically- be driven; the Low VW Guy probably gets vertigo when driving a vehicle at such high altitudes. Some bodywork might be a good idea, but overall it seems quite solid.

Once again, my lack of Transporter expertise means I need to grab a model year at random from a possible range. I can tell we're looking at a 1963-67 here, so I'm picking the middle year from that range. VW experts, help me out here!

El Camino, where are you?

Pontiac was considering naming it’s new Pontiac G8 Sport Truck, the El Camino. Luckily folks within Pontiac and Chevrolet had some discussions and decided it was just strange to toss a Chevy Brand on a Pontiac even though everything is made under the same roof. Customers have a hard enough time deciding what the heck they are going to buy with the current branding problems at General Motors, all they needed was an old vintage car name on a different branch of GM.

I do however think the El Camino brand has some juice left in the tank and I think they should bring it back. Just not under the Pontiac branch of things.

A lot of car fans and Camaro lovers are chomping at the bit to get a taste of the new Camaro slated to be released as a 2010 model. The above video is a mere teaser of the look and sound that will be the new Camaro. For many, all the sneak-peeks and video have been magnificent teasers for a crowd already percolating with interest.

Well if you thought the above video was of any interest you will want to take the leap over to the Camaro5forum for a longer version of the same test run, but without the dialogue. During the linked video you will get a clearer impression of the V8 rumble that Chevy has in store for their Camaro faithful. It is truly a note that would catch the ear of any muscle car aficionado.

One less fortunate note during the video was watching the Camaro get buzzed by a very swift Porsche. You will also catch a glimpse of a Pontiac G8 GT testing on the same track of the Camaro.

Six Degrees of Automotive Separation – Nissan and Chrysler

Nissan and Chrysler, can you connect them in six degrees or less?

Okay, last week’s Hemmings Six Degrees of Automotive Separation Challenge kinda fell flat on its face. Maybe too open-ended? And in reviewing past challenges, we quickly realized that we haven’t yet made a Japanese car manufacturer one of the endpoints of a challenge.

So to make up for last week, a typical challenge. And to make up for the last five months, a challenge involving a Japanese company. Let’s pick Nissan. And let’s also pick its third-place counterpart in the U.S., Chrysler. I know you can connect these two in six degrees or less. But how obscure can you make the connections?

The rules, as always, are simple: A connection consists of one company owning another, merging with another or sharing another’s parts. Explain your connections, and if you need examples, check out our previous Hemmings Six Degrees of Automotive Separation Challenges.

2009 BMW 7-Series, ActiveHybrid Hit LA Show Floor [BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid]

BMW rolled out the red carpet for the debut of the new 2009 BMW 7-Series and BMW Concept 7-Series ActiveHybrid, both driving across the carpet under power of BMW's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. The difference is while the 2009 7-Series moved with the force of 400 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque, the 7-Series ActiveHybid had an additional 20 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque on tap thanks to the addition of an electric motor. The former will go on sale early next year while the latter is but a concept, though one we believe is close to the design of a future BMW hybrid. Press releases and live photos below.

Check out more on the BMW 7-Series from CarandDriver.com

BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid: The BMW of hybrids
As an integral part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid previews the potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a luxury sedan. In typical BMW fashion, this new concept car combines a significant reduction of fuel consumption and emissions with a level of driving dynamics never seen before even in this class of hybrid cars.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is an intelligent symbiosis of BMW's new twin-turbo V8 engine and electric drive as a mild hybrid concept. A compact electric motor, integrated into the transmission housing, replaces the conventional alternator as well as the starter. Power to run all electrics on-board the car is generated by means of Brake Energy Regeneration. The combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor take the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8's already potent 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque and supplies an additional 20 horsepower and up to 155 lb-ft of torque as needed. The drivetrain technology featured in the concept car allows enhanced driving dynamics together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by 15 percent in the EU test cycle compared to the same car running on a combustion engine alone. At the same time the use of BMW ActiveHybrid technology does not require any compromises in driving qualities and features of the BMW 7 Series.

Energy is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery housed in the luggage compartment. An Auto Start Stop function helps to ensure optimum efficiency in all driving situations.

The hybrid technology showcased in the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is perfectly suited to the new benchmark in the full-sized performance luxury sedan segment just as the two-mode hybrid technology used in the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, also on display in Los Angeles, is well matched to the world's first Sports Activity Coupe.

BMW 7 Series again sets the benchmark
The all-new fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series radiates a natural presence, inherent sportiness and an elegance born of precision in concept and execution. A new V-8 engine with direct injection and twin turbochargers expresses BMW EfficientDynamics at the highest level of performance. The 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 delivers 400 hp and 450lb-ft of torque. New, exclusive BMW driver-assistance systems and comfort-related features further add to a truly exceptional driving and riding experience.

Inside the new 7, the ambiance is luxurious, of transcendent quality and - most important of all - inviting. The driver-oriented control center features Black Panel technology. More functions than ever are conveniently accessible to the driver from the multi-function steering wheel.

The new 7 is BMW's first passenger car with multi-link double-wishbone front suspension. The new Integral V rear suspension incorporates extensive use of aluminum. On the long wheelbase 750Li, self-leveling air suspension is standard. Also new, and a world premiere: Integral Active Steering, which adds speed-sensitive rear-wheel steering. With the standard Driving Dynamics Control, the driver can choose between four settings for shock-absorber firmness, transmission shift characteristics, engine-throttle response and power-steering assist.

An array of innovative driver-assistance options unique in the luxury segment includes Active Cruise Control with new stop-and-go capability, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Head-up Display, High Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with new Pedestrian Detection, Side View and Back-up Cameras.

All of this will make the new 7 once again the benchmark for performance, luxury, efficiency and safety when it arrives in the US in early 2009.

2009 BMW 7-Series, Now With 400 hp Twin-Turbo V8

The next generation 7-Series has officially arrived, though if you've been paying attention you've already seen the 2009 BMW 7-series and now that the design team has gone to great effort to correct the awkward-looking rear quarters of the car. A new twin-turbocharged, direct-injection 4.4-liter V8 manages 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, which should make the chauffeur happy. If you find yourself behind the wheel there's a plethora of technology to keep you from killing yourself including Active Cruise Control, Active Blind Spot Detection, BMW Night Vision and cameras on the side and rear of the luxo-yacht. The new 7-series is also the first BMW with a multi-link double-wishbone front suspension. It's something to think about on the way to the appointment with your increasingly distressed stock broker.

What Will Win The LA Auto Show: Hybrids, Convertibles Or High Horsepower? [Question Of The Day]

This year's LA Auto Show has three major themes: Hybrids, Convertibles and High Horsepower. It's an intense battle for the hearts and minds of the Los Angelenos, whose hearts want Horsepower, whose minds prefer hybrids and whose weather demands convertibles. Representing the Hybrids are the 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid and 2010 Fusion Hybrid twins from Ford and the strange-lookiong Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid. In the High Horsepower corner we have the Spyker C8 Laviolette LM85, 2010 Ford Mustang and Nissan 370Z. Convertibles also abound, including the 2009 Porsche Boxster and Mustang Convertible. Who will be king?

Given that this is the LA Auto Show, we're assuming that the Hollywood producers and financial types that use the auto show to make their Christmas (or Hanukkah) wish-lists don't have to make those kind of choices. Why chose one when you can have all in one package? That's where the Lamborghini LP 560-4 Spyder comes in handy. Fast? Check. Topless? Check. Ungodly expensive? Cash or Check!?! Just buy your assistant a 2010 Nissan Cube to help offset your carbon emissions. Why live green when you have all that green to spend?

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder Drops Top Ahead Of LA [Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder]

The Lamborghini LP 560-4 Spyder's dropped its top in press photos that have made their way to the web ahead of an expected debut later today at the LA Auto Show. The newest amped-up Lambo gets the body of Gallardo convertible and the powertrain of the LP 560-4, that means a 5.2-liter V10 engine with 560 HP and 398 lb-ft of torque, good for a top speed of 201 MPH after a 0-62 MPH run of a speedy 4 seconds. Awfully speedy in the hardtop but we'll have to see how that stands up for the convertible.

The most amusing part of the whole car, to us anyway, is the piece of glass between the seats. Normally those are put back there to keep your hair in place and allow a conversation to carry on. In this case it'll probably do the first job fine, but we have a feeling an open top with a that high strung Italian V8 wailing away inches behind your head will have something to say in all your conversations. We'll be getting the complete details and live reveal images with the always lovely Lamborghini booth professionals later today at the car's official reveal.

Convertibles, V8 Ultra-Muscle and Hot Hatches… Oh My!

Audi RS3 rendering

Audi RS3 rendering

Whoa, baby, we’ve got some cool cars coming to America!

What do you like: convertible muscle cars? You’re covered. A little more horsepower for your Challenger? Check. A small hatch that is affordable and still fun to drive? It can be yours. What about a 340-hp hatchback that’ll scoot to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds? We can only hope.

camaro_convertibleChevrolet is readying the popular Camaro with a rag top, according to the boys over at Autoblog. Check out this picture of a group of fresh-off-the-line convertibles sitting at the Holden plant in Australia. Anyone up for buying a 2011 convertible Camaro? Even in the silver/tan color scheme?

Owners of ‘08 or ‘09 Dodge Challengers now have an option of upgrading to the Classic Design Concepts Group 2 Challenger, a series of options that can raise the horsepower to a stellar 560. Also available are 12.5-inch-wide rear tires, Baer brakes, lowering springs, a custom hood, and more. The full upgrade can bring the cost of an SRT Challenger to over $79K, putting it close to Viper territory. Still though, at that price, it’s dang-near worth it.

suzuki-sx4-sportbackLooking for something much less expensive but still fairly fun to drive? Suzuki hopes to catch your eye with the 2010 SX4 Sportback. Looking nearly identical to the SX4 Crossover at first glance, the Sportback sits lower to the ground, has 17″ wheels and tires, isn’t offered in AWD, and lacks roof rails. And it has only 410 fewer horsepower than that Group 2 Challenger.

But a six-speed manual tranny, performance shocks, and anti-roll bars should help the SX4 Sportback provide a fun drive while getting 30 miles per gallon. In my mind, the SX4 Crossover and Sportback are further proof that Suzuki is ready to seriously take on the U.S. market.

Finally, we’re nearly beyond words at the thought of the new Audi RS3 (pictured at the top of this story) hitting America. Granted, the odds aren’t great that we’ll see it here, but it’s not out of the question. So for now we can drool over these numbers provided by the good folks at Leftlane:

At the heart of the RS3 will be an Audi TT RS-sourced 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine. Tuned to produce 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, the RS3 should be able to easily scoot from 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds, with the electronic nannies kicking in at about 155 mph.

We’ll keep an eye on next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, where Audi should release more info and prices.

Are there any new car debuts you’re eager to see?
